World News in Brief: November 9

China exports grew at the fastest pace in 19 months in October, while imports also rose, official data showed on November 7, as the world’s second largest economy continued to recover after being hit hard by the coronavirus crisis earlier this year.

* Japan on Monday (November 9) welcomes the visit of Republic of Korea (ROK)’s intelligence chief Park Jie-won as an opportunity to discuss frosty ties between Seoul and Tokyo, the government’s chief spokesman said. The ROK’s National Intelligence Service chief arrived in Tokyo on Sunday and met senior ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Nikai Toshihiro.
* The defence ministry of the Nagorno-Karabakh said on Monday it had recorded another 44 casualties among its military, pushing its military death toll to 1,221 since fighting with Azeri forces erupted on Sept. 27. Fighting has surged to its worst level since the 1990s, when about 30,000 people were killed.
* Sweden’s government will extend wage support and income compensation for companies hit by the coronavirus pandemic and measures to halt its spread, Swedish media reported on Monday.
* More than 50.35 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,255,087 have died, according to a Reuters tally. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
* China reported 33 new COVID-19 cases on Nov. 8, up from 28 cases a day earlier, the national health authority reported on Monday. The National Health Commission said 32 of the cases were imported in people returning from overseas. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in mainland China now stands at 86,245, while the death toll remains unchanged at 4,634.
* Brazil on Sunday reported 128 new COVID-19 deaths and 10,554 new coronavirus cases, according to official data. Since the start of the pandemic, 162,397 people have died in Brazil and more than 5.66 million have been infected with the virus, the data shows.
* Russia reported a record high of 21,798 new coronavirus infections on Monday, including 6,897 in the capital Moscow, bringing the national tally to 1,796,132. Authorities also reported 256 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the official death toll to 30,793.
* Indonesia reported 2,853 new coronavirus infections on Monday, taking the total number of cases to 440,569, data from the country’s COVID-19 task force showed. It also reported 75 more deaths, taking total fatalities to 14,689. Overall, 372,266 people have recovered from the virus, it said.
* The Philippines reported 108 new deaths from COVID-19 on Monday, the highest daily death toll since Oct. 23, taking total fatalities to 7,647, the country’s health ministry said. The Department of Health also reported 2,058 new coronavirus infections, taking the total to 398,449, the second highest number in Southeast Asia.
* The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 13,363 to 671,868, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Monday. The reported death toll rose by 63 to 11,352.
* Mexico’s health ministry reported on Sunday 5,887 additional coronavirus cases and 219 more deaths, bringing the official number of cases to 967,825 and the death toll to 95,027. Health officials have said the real number of infections and deaths is likely significantly higher.
* Australia’s second most populous state, the epicentre of the country’s COVID-19 outbreak, will relax restrictions after recording its ninth consecutive day with no infections.
* Portugal will impose localised night-time curfews from Monday to contain the spread of the coronavirus as the number of cases reached a record high.
* Warsaw’s mayor has called off an annual Independence Day march scheduled for Nov. 11 amid a rise in coronavirus cases in Poland.
* The Czech Republic reported 3,608 new coronavirus cases for Nov. 8, the lowest daily tally in the country in four weeks, Health Ministry data showed on Monday. The number of new cases is nearly 3,000 less than reported a week earlier and brings the total count to 414,828 in the country of 10.7 million, which has seen one of Europe’s highest infection rates in recent weeks.
* Iran’s daily tally of coronavirus deaths hit a record high of 459 on Sunday, the health ministry said, increasing the official toll to 38,291 in the Middle East’s worst-hit country.
* Ethiopia is not plunging into chaos due to a military operation launched by the federal government in the northern Tigray region, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Monday, amid fears of civil war in Africa’s second most populous nation.
