An elderly woman was caught cutting fruit with a 20cm long knife aboard a HCMC-Hanoi flight Monday morning. The apparent security lapse is being investigated.
The incident happened aboard Vietnam Airlines flight VN208. The flight attendant who spotted the knife confiscated it immediately. Further details were not revealed.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) ordered a comprehensive security inspection of the whole aircraft following the incident.
Current regulations prohibit passengers from carrying razors, paper knives, knives with blades (excluding the knife handle) longer than 6 cm and knives with handle and blade over 10 cm long in their carry-on luggage.
Violations can attract fines of VND7-10 million ($298-426.48).
To Tu Hung, head of the Aviation Security Department under CAAV, said serious errors discovered in such investigations can lead to the sanctioning of passengers and revoking the license of the security officer.
