Winter of 2020 forecast to arrive early with below-average temperatures

Winter in Vietnam is forecast to arrive early this year while recording lower temperatures than the average for many years, with a high likelihood of record-breaking cold spells, according to weather forecasters.

The national weather service stated that the northern region could see the first wave of cold air in late September, causing a steep decline in temperatures, although the average mercury reading for September this year is 0.5-1C higher than usual.

In the final months of the year, the water surface in the central Pacific will likely become abnormally colder due to the La Nina phenomenon, which increases the intensity of cold air in northern Vietnam, said Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

He added that most forecast models have output similar results with a high degree of accuracy, predicting that more extreme cold waves are expected to occur in the northern mountainous region this year.

The national weather service noted that temperatures across the country during November and December are forecast to be 0.5-1C lower than average, indication of a harsher winter than in 2019.

The NCHMF also forecast that there will be another 7-9 typhoons and tropical depressions forming in the East Sea/South China Sea within the remainder of the year, with about 4-5 directly affecting the Vietnamese mainland, primarily in the central and southern regions.
