VAR to be used in AFC Champions League from quarter-final stage

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used from the quarter-final stage of the 2020 AFC Champions League, Asia’s soccer governing body said on Monday.

The technology was first used in Asian soccer last year from the last-eight stage of the AFC Asian Cup. It was then successfully implemented across all 32 games of the AFC under-23 championship in Thailand in January and is set to be introduced in AFC club competitions for the first time.

* The Olympic flame will go on display at a Tokyo museum in September, organisers said Monday (Aug 24), after the coronavirus pandemic forced them to scrap the torch relay and put the Games on hold. The flame, which arrived in Japan for the nationwide relay in March, will be available for public viewing from Sep 1 to Nov 1 at Tokyo’s Olympic museum, officials said.

* Newcastle United have signed Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick on a four-year contract, the Premier League club said on Monday. Hendrick, who has 54 caps, arrives at St James’ Park on a free transfer after leaving Burnley at the end of his contract last month.

* Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has signed a new contract to extend his stay at the King Power Stadium until at least 2024, the Premier League club said on Monday (Aug 24). The 23-year-old playmaker has made a huge impression since joining Leicester from Norwich City in 2018, scoring 16 goals in 76 appearances across all competitions.

* Third seed Daniil Medvedev launched the defence of his Western and Southern Open title with a tidy 6-4 6-4 second round win over Marcos Giron on Monday (Aug 24), getting his US Open preparations off to an upbeat start.

* Serena Williams shook off some COVID-19 layoff rust to grind out a 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(0) win over Dutch qualifier Arantxa Rus on Monday (Aug 24) to move into the third round of the Western and Southern Open.

* Andy Murray claimed the biggest win of his comeback and a place in the last 16 of the Western and Southern Open on Monday, taking out self-destructing fifth seed Alexander Zverev 6-3 3-6 7-5.

* Police said they arrested 148 people as Paris Saint-Germain fans set cars ablaze and clashed with police on the Champs-Elysees in the French capital after the Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday (Aug 23). Around 5,000 supporters had gathered at Paris’s Parc des Princes to cheer on PSG, lighting flares and chanting as they watched the 1-0 defeat in Lisbon on a big screen.
