National Tennis Championship attracts 190 players

The 2020 National Tennis Championship officially kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City on October 28 with the participation of 190 players representing 15 units and clubs from across the country.

The annual tournament, which lasts until November 8, has brought together most of the popular faces of Vietnamese tennis, such as no. 1 player Ly Hoang Nam, Nguyen Van Phuong and Trinh Linh Giang (Hai Dang Club), Nguyen Dac Tien (Hanoi), and Le Quoc Khanh and Dao Minh Trang (Hung Thinh Ho Chi Minh City).

The competitors are battling it out for medals in seven categories, including men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, and the men’s and women’s team events.

A total stake of VND220 million (roughly US$9,500) is up for grabs, with the men’s and women’s singles champions to receive VND60 million and VND40 million, respectively.

After the opening ceremony, the first-round matches in the men’s team category took place, with victories for Hai Dang 1 against Becamex Binh Duong 2 (2-1), Becamex Binh Duong 1 against the Army team 2 (3-0), and Hai Dang 2 against the Vietnam Tennis Federation team (2-1).

The tournament aims to evaluate tennis training in localities nationwide, while selecting outstanding players for the national teams in preparation for the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which will be hosted in Vietnam next year.

Last year’s championship witnessed the absolute dominance of Hung Thinh Ho Chi Minh City as they claimed gold medals in all five categories: men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.
