Leeds secure Premier League promotion after 16-year absence

Leeds United returned to the Premier League after a 16-year absence on Friday as West Bromwich Albion’s loss at Huddersfield Town guaranteed them a top-two finish in the Championship.

Refunds for ticket holders unable to attend the rescheduled games will begin in late 2020, they added.

* Germany’s World Cup winner Andre Schuerrle announced his retirement from football at the age of 29 on Friday, two days after his contract with Borussia Dortmund was terminated by mutual consent. Schuerrle, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, had one year left on his deal at Dortmund but the club announced his departure on Wednesday.

* Sebastian Vettel provided a reminder of the talents that won him four drivers’ world titles on Friday (Jul 17) when he topped the times for Ferrari in a wet second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton opting to sit out the session. Vettel clocked a best lap in one minute 40.464 seconds to outpace nearest rival and championship leader Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes by 0.272s.

* The Triathlon World Championships will take place in 2020, the World Triathlon Executive Board said on Friday, though dates and venues have not been determined for the competition. The championships were originally scheduled to take place at August’s Edmonton Grand Final, which was cancelled in April due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

* Coach Jorge Jesus is leaving Brazilian champions Flamengo to return to his native Portugal and seems almost certain to be heading for a second spell in charge of Benfica. The Rio de Janeiro club confirmed on Friday that the 65-year-old Jesus was leaving but did not say for which team.
