Last-gasp PSG beat Atalanta to reach Champions League semis

Paris St Germain staged a superb comeback by scoring two late goals to beat Atalanta 2-1 and book a spot in the Champions League semi-finals after a thrilling finish on Wednesday (Aug 12).

Atalanta’s superb display looked like dumping PSG out of the competition but Marquinhos levelled from close range in the final minute before Frenchman Kylian Mbappe set up fellow substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for a stoppage-time winner.

* A Barcelona player has tested positive for the coronavirus after reporting back for pre-season training, the La Liga side said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 12).

* Liverpool will receive a record £175 million (US$228.45 million) payout for winning the Premier League after all 20 clubs in England’s top-flight agreed to postpone any reductions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Times.

* Bayern Munich’s teenage forward Alphonso Davies missed a training session in Portugal on Wednesday (Aug 12) ahead of the Champions League clash against Barcelona because of a “slight groin problem”. Bayern head coach Hansi Flick confirmed the 19-year-old sat out the session as “a safety measure” ahead of the European quarter-final in Lisbon.

* Zach Johnson, a 12-times winner on the PGA Tour who is known for his gracious demeanor and good sportsmanship, was named the recipient of the 2020 Payne Stewart Award on Wednesday. The honor is given annually to a player sharing the late Stewart’s respect for the traditions of the game and his commitment to uphold golf’s heritage of charitable support.

* French midfielder Blaise Matuidi will leave Juventus after three seasons following the mutual termination of his contract, the Serie A champions said on Wednesday (Aug 12). Matuidi, linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami in the Italian media, made 45 appearances for Juventus across all competitions last season as they claimed the league title for a ninth season in a row.

* Southampton have signed Ghanaian centre back Mohammed Salisu from La Liga side Real Valladolid on a four-year contract, the Premier League club said on Wednesday. The 21-year-old made 32 appearances for Valladolid across all competitions last season as they finished 13th in La Liga.
