Last COVID-19 patient in Da Nang discharged from hospital

The last COVID-19 patient in Da Nang was discharged from the Hoa Vang Field Hospital in the central coastal city this morning (Sep 23), meaning Da Nang is now totally free from the coronavirus.

Known as Patient no. 936, the local man, 56, is now in stable health, with multiple negative test results for SARS-CoV-2 – the corona virus that causes COVID-19. After discharge, he will continue to practice home-isolation for the next 14 days under monitoring from the local health sector.

“Today I was discharged from the hospital and I feel very happy. During the course of my treatment for over 30 days, I have received great attention from nurses and doctors at Hoa Vang Field Hospital. I sincerely thank everyone,” the patient shared with joy.

Doctor Dang Cong Quyt from the hospital said that the patient had been tested for SARS-CoV-2 continuously and was eligible to be declared as recovered following the standards set by the Ministry of Health.

“He was the last patient with COVID-19 undergoing treatment in Da Nang, so during his treatment, he was very worried because he suffered from relatively complicated underlying diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes. We must provide COVID-19 treatment for the patient combined with treating other co-morbidities while always being with the patient to encourage him. He was 19 times confirmed as positive for SARS-CoV-2 before, making him suffer from persistent insomnia. We both provided him with treatment and encouraged him a lot,” said Quyt.

At the announcement, Ngo Thi Kim Yen, Head of the Da Nang Department of Health, said: “Upon seeing the treatment regimen for Patient 936 at the Hoa Vang Field Hospital, the doctors and I were very worried about this case, but today the patient was discharged, which is a joy for the Da Nang health sector and all the people in the city, marking the full two months of Da Nang fighting the epidemic as being at its end.”

Da Nang emerged as a new epicentre of the second COVID-19 infection wave in Vietnam, marked by the first new case in some time being confirmed in the tourist attraction on July 25.

The Hoa Vang Field Hospital was established on August 1 and it received and provided treatment for 258 COVID-19 patients, of which 239 recovered and 15 died. After the last patient was discharged from the hospital, the facility will conduct disinfection to prepare for resuming normal medical examination and treatment for local residents. Doctors directly treating COVID-19 patients there will undergo medical isolation for 14 days as prescribed before continuing their normal activities.

So far, nearly 92% of a total of 1,068 COVID-19 patients in Vietnam have recovered, leaving only 51 patients undergoing treatment at medical facilities nationwide, with the majority (16 patients) concentrated at the Medical Centre of Long Dien District, Thua Thien Hue Province, followed by the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases 2 in Hanoi with nine patients. Vietnam no longer has severely-ill COVID-19 patients. 12 patients among them have been tested negative at least thrice.

As of this morning, the country had been free of community transmission of COVID-19 for 21 consecutive days.

Of the total, 691 were community infections, including 551 linked with Da Nang since July 25. There were 35 fatalities, most of them elderly and suffering from serious co-morbidities, such as end-stage chronic kidney failure, blood cancer, coronary syndrome, acute respiratory failure, degenerative polyarthritis, hypertension, chronic adrenal insufficiency and diabetes.
