KOICA provides US$9 million to support Vietnam in strengthening agricultural education

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) signed a record of discussions on June 24 for a US$9 million project on strengthening agricultural higher education of VNU-HCM.

The seven-year project aims to enhance the capacity of lecturers at An Giang University under VNU-HCM, improve the university’s education quality, strengthen its governance capacity, and promote collaboration between academia and industry.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vu Hai Quan, President of VNU-HCM, agriculture plays an important role in the economy. To foster economic growth, the agricultural sector needs to innovate in many areas, including education and training. Therefore, developing an advanced research team and improving the quality of human resources are essential in shifting towards high-tech agriculture.

He said that An Giang University has worked to establish a foundation for high-quality research and training to facilitate the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta region. Thus, financial support and the sharing of professional experiences and successful lessons from countries around the world, particularly the Republic of Korea, are extremely necessary for its development process.

He hailed that the project will create favourable conditions for An Giang University to improve its staff capacity as well as its teaching and learning programmes, and promote high-quality human resources training, thus meeting the needs of agricultural development.

Through the project, An Giang University and VNU-HCM in general will also have the opportunity to expand international cooperation relations and promote research and training cooperation with many prestigious universities, organisations and enterprises in the ROK, he added.
