NDO – The General Statistics Office said that the nation’s industrial production continues to face difficulties with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in July up by 3.6% over the previous months and only 1.1% over the same period in 2019. |

The IIP in the first seven months of this year increased by 2.6% over the same period in 2019, the lowest expansion in recent years. The same period last year saw a 9.4% expansion of the IIP. Industrial production continues to encounter instability due to the complicated developments of the coronavirus on a global scale, resulting in disruptions to the supply chain of input materials. In the past seven months, several sectors posted declining industrial production, including motor vehicles, down 15.4%; the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, down 11.3%; the repair, maintenance and installation of machines and equipment, down 8.9%; the production of beverages, down 6.3%; and the production of apparels, down 4.6%; among others. During the period, some industrial sectors reported increasing production over the same period last year, such as medicines, pharmaceutical chemicals and medicinal materials, up 27.1%; the exploitation of metal ore, up 15.7%; paper and paper products, up 8.2%; electronic products, computers and optical products, up 8.1%; and tobacco, chemicals and chemical products, up 7.4%.
