* Lazio continued their dismal home form in Serie A on Saturday when two defensive blunders handed Verona a 2-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico. The win took Verona up to sixth place with 19 points, overtaking Lazio who are eighth with 17. None of Verona’s players were born when their team last beat Lazio away, winning 1-0 in December 1984.

* Real Madrid showed why they are Liga champions with a convincing 2-0 home win over Atletico Madrid in the derby on Saturday to end the pacesetters’ unbeaten start to the league season. Atletico still lead the standings on 26 points, while Real climbed to third and closed the gap on their city rivals to three points, although Diego Simeone’s side have a game in hand.

* McLaren are selling a minority stake in their Formula One team to a consortium of US-based investors in a deal that will value the British racing outfit at 560 million pounds (US$740.49 million), Sky News reported on Saturday.

* Promoted Huesca finally won their first match of the Liga season at the 13th attempt on Saturday as they beat Alaves 1-0 at home. Elsewhere, Sevilla earned a 1-0 win at Getafe while Valencia struck late to grab a 2-2 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao.

* Torino forward Andrea Belotti scored his 100th goal for the club in all competitions but it turned out to be in vain as they lost 3-2 at home to Udinese in Serie A on Saturday despite clawing back a two-goal deficit.

* Max Verstappen left it until the last lap of the final Formula One qualifying session of the season to break the Mercedes stranglehold on pole position and put his Red Bull in the number one slot for Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The 23-year-old Dutchman beat provisional pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas by just 0.025 seconds, denying Mercedes their 14th front-row lockout from 17 races. Champion Lewis Hamilton, back in his Mercedes after missing last weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix with COVID-19, qualified third.

* Silverstone will rename its International Pits Straight after seven-times Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, the home of the British Grand Prix announced on Saturday. Silverstone said in a statement that the stretch of track, flanked by the Wing building, would become Hamilton Straight.

* Olympique de Marseille extended their Ligue 1 winning run to six games as they cut Paris St Germain’s lead at the top to one point with a clinical 2-1 home won over AS Monaco on Saturday. Second-placed OM, who still have a game in hand, prevailed thanks to early goals by Florian Thauvin and Dario Benedetto as they moved onto 27 points from 12 games.

* Promoted VfB Stuttgart scored three times in 10 minutes to crush hosts Borussia Dortmund 5-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday and maintain their unbeaten run on the road this season.

* Russia’s Umar Kremlev was elected president of the International Boxing Association at a virtual congress on Saturday, amateur boxing’s governing body said.

* Thousands of mourners gathered in the Italian city of Vicenza on Saturday for the funeral of former Italy forward Paolo Rossi, whose coffin was carried to the cathedral by his team-mates from the 1982 World Cup-winning side.

* McLaren are interested in entering Formula E once the company’s battery supply contract ends in 2022 and the electric series introduces its Gen3 car, McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown said on Saturday.
